Abstract

Bilbao Guggenheim Museum which was designed by Frank Gehry and opened in 1997 is the first building built by the aid of CATIA software which was formerly used by aviation and automotive industries. Not only the architectural project but also the base of the structural project has been realized by the usage of this specific software. Understanding the changing design and construction processes which started by Frank Gehry’s use of CATIA and which continues with contributions of different software’s and architecture offices, also thinking on how the positions of the architect and the civil engineer reveals the final structural design seem critical on foreseeing “the future of construction”. In this article it is aimed to understand, if the usage of CATIA made any innovations on the relationship of the architect and the civil engineer in the design process which was determined mostly in the enlightenment period. To achieve this, collaboration processes of Gehry’s Office FOG/A (Frank Owen Gehry and Associates) with SOM (Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Llp.) who were responsible for the civil engineering services is studied further.
