Abstract

Throughout history, human skin has been used as a surface of representation for images; initially as a surface for images belonging to an immortal transcendence outside human body -and after the modern split, as a surface for images that no longer belong to any transcendental unity. Language is also one of the means that human beings use for their self-discovery. Human beings, while granting immortality to language in ancient times, they consider language as a means of sustaining continuity of self-destruction and self-reconstruction in modern times. In this context, writing −the transcription of the language as a reproduction of the thought with a visual representation− manifests itself as another effective medium for self-discovery. This study aims to introduce a new reading for the work of Jenny Holzer, who enables architectural façade/skin to communicate with writing, by following the parallelism between writing and the skin marking.
