Abstract

Spatial structures have been standardized by the uniformed life patterns due to globalization. However, still today, villages are important rural settlement units where sense of place and belongingness, social connectedness and place dependence have been felt deeply. This paper aims to investigate the culture-place relationships in traditional rural housing typologies through the space syntax method. Initially, three villages, namely Pasalar, Duraklar and Dadali were chosen from Duzce, representing three different cultures (Laz, Circassian and Turkish), respectively. The primary objective was to investigate whether the chosen housing units developed similarly in their spatial configurations to the other units chosen from the same village. To understand the similarities and differences through the space syntax method between the traditional rural housing units of the three villages of the same city was the secondary objective. Studies investigating the traditional rural housing through numerical methods have gathered momentum in the recent literature and help obtain empirical results. To contribute to the field from this aspect, the syntactic parameters were used in the comparisons, to name a few, connectivity, integration, mean depth, control value, intelligibility and accessibility. The initial results provided empirical evidence that the chosen houses are the representatives of the chosen cultures. The cross-cultural comparisons also showed that Laz and Turkish house forms are similar in their spatial configurations, while Circassian houses differ from the other two as being the most integrated, intelligible and accessible. However, the housing formations in all three cultural locations have tended to resemble each other with the social, cultural and economic changes and the increase in the urbanisation rate. Overall, this research is an initial attempt for the determination of culture-led syntactical design parameters for the three cultures hosted in Duzce and can be developed further to benefit the future housing design practice by introducing design guidance in line with tradition.
