This article presents generative and participatory design research methods adapted to facilitate an effective dialogue with elderly people to understand their experiences, needs and preferences within the scope of Middle East Technical University Technology Transfer Office research project conducted in collaboration with the SustainDRL research group and VitrA Innovation Center between 2018-2019. The project aimed to comprehend the experiences, needs and preferences (e.g. accessibility, accidents, safety, other special needs, etc.) of adults aged 65 and older in the domestic bathroom environment, and to develop design considerations based on the conclusions on and insights into the findings which could provide the design and product development process with an input. This design research consists of Enactment Session and the Experience Reflection Modelling (ERM) methods as complementary to each other. The article starts with the related literature review and continues by explaining in detail the development and implementation processes of the adapted generative tools and methods. It ends with the researchers’ suggestions for and insights into generative and participatory design methods, the conduct of the design research, and the potential future research topics.
