Abstract

Environmental impacts of buildings initially arise with the construction process. Therefore, analyzing environmental impacts of building construction processes during design and construction planning phases is crucial to be able to take necessary measures. The development and employment of new construction planning models, which also considers environmental consequences in addition to cost, duration and quality criteria, require a difficult innovation process. Hence, defining basic principles for the environmental planning of the construction process and raise awareness within stakeholders of the Turkish construction industry to this subject is an important initiative. In this study, environmental performance principles for environmental management of building construction process are presented in consideration of the relationships between construction technology options and environmental impacts of the process. Firstly, construction technology components, which are information tools and methods, are classified. Then, environmental performance parameters of building construction process are defined within the scope of resources, ecosystem quality and human health issues. Finally, the relationships between construction technology components and environmental performance parameters are analyzed and environmental principles for construction planning are set forth as the preservation of site, controlling construction activities, health and security precautions, construction waste management and training of stakeholders..
