Abstract

Having an important place throughout human history, timber has been used as construction and transport materials in the sea context for centuries. Comparing it with other materials, there are many features that make timber superior. Some of the most important ones of these features can be identified as being a renewable material source, high durability and aesthetic nature attributed to timber when used with protective materials. This study is based on scientific observations and experimental work that focus on physical and mechanic changes caused to timber used in the “yacht” category of sea transporters by the sea environment, protective materials and aging.
