Abstract

In all over Europe, Austrian architecture may be said to be a pioneer in Modern Architecture. In this country, architects had to face frequently changing political systems and ideological, cultural and aesthetic conceptions changing accordingly. Despite these events, Holzmeister’s architectural tendency protected its essential qualities and the architect was missioned to design representative buildings reflecting the State’s authority. His role in Vienna was mainly to participate to discussions concerning church architecture and to express himself thanks to his religious buildings. It is quite difficult to assign a single style to the architect’s work especially concerning his tendencies in his own country. The architect has avoided every kind of argument about Modern Architecture and rejected everywhere he interpreted the traditional common forms with a monumental expression reminding us his buildings in Ankara, not in form, but in expression. The architect’s work in Ankara is more successful formally than those in his own country.
