Abstract

It is an undisputable fact that our building stock should be revised in order to meet current living standarts and codes. However, at the point of refunctioning cultural assets that need protection, the issue of fire safety brings some problems that need resolution. Executing fire safety today, with the latest quality standards may produce various results. We see structures where the application interferes with the building's identity, or the opposite, applications that blend in with the building. There are a number of revisions for fire safety that can be applied to an existing building. The most common application we come accross in urban spaces is the fire escape. This study elaborates on good and bad practices of fire escape staircases, investigating examples from Beyoğlu, İstanbul. In this context, the current situation of fire escape staircases in Turkey is analyzed.
