This paper aims to examine the evolution of the concept of shopping in the historical process and underline the architectural effects of this evolution in Bursa by examples of late practices in the town.Particularly of our interest are the shopping centers built outside the city center, on the motorways connecting Bursa to Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara, with an effort to determine their architectural identity and the architectural styles employed in their design. The concepts of consuming and shopping are among the most important factors to determine the shaping of settlements throughout history, in other words, cities would form around the shopping areas. Bursa stands as a very interesting example to reflect the evolution of the concept of shopping in Turkey with the fame it has earned by its historical shopping district. After our examination of the shopping centers built outside Bursa city center, it would be possible to conclude that there is a wide stylistical variety in their design attitudes, therefore it is not possible to speak about a lingual or visual unity.
